Spring
'Spring' by Edrey Allott
Winter drags on:
Grey day pursued by
Grey day. The sun
Appears, winks a bleary eye,
Surveys his pale cold kingdom
And disappears once more
Behind the draperies of cloud.
Snowdrops pop up
Courageously –
Then, wave a white banner
Of truce, and disappear
Defeated.
No spring yet
No warmth, no hope
No comfort in the cold
Until – one morning
A bird sings
An imperious call to action.
The sun smiles down;
The flowers lift their faces;
Jig about in the breeze:
The world calls out:
‘Ha ha: you were mistaken;
You thought that life had left the world;
That colour had dimmed and faded
And only grey pervaded
But see – it’s spring;
It’s resurrection time;
Easter’s here’.
