'Here' by Rebecca Dyde

by Rebecca Dyde 26th April 2013

Here, silence amongst the great and the fallen
nearby, a meadow of cornflower blue and poppy red,
a place of remembrance, reflecting sorrow and loss:
of sacrifices given and honour to the dead.

Here, a simple, limestone form;
a circle within a circle, plain, equal to all.
To sit in quiet reflection, where the spirit reveals
in simple reverence with heads bowed low.

Here, reconciliation, equality, truth and peace
to all race and creed.
No shrine to worship, only spirit to lead
a pathway to God, faith prompting our conscience in this deed.

‘The spirit of Christ will never move us to war against any man’,
George Fox said,
our conviction: tending the sick and wounded on the battlefield
instead.

Sacrifice, suffering, prejudice and war,
Here a quiet place, conflict no more.
A gentle breeze, the hum of bees, the song of a bird,
Silence as the spirit speaks:
‘Here, be still and know that I am God…’
